NICOLA LOW

NICOLA LOW, MD - PROFESSOR OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH, UNIVERSITY BERN, SWITZERLAND Nicola Low is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. Her main research interests are the evaluation of the benefits and harms of screening for sexually transmitted infections (STI), partner notification, vaccination, antimicrobial resistance, new technologies for STI control and emerging STI, including Zika virus. Prof. Low completed her specialist training in genitourinary medicine, public health and communicable disease epidemiology in the UK. She acts as a temporary adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO) on STI and Zika. She has editorial positions at Sexually Transmitted Infections, PLOS Medicine and the Cochrane STI Group and is a member of the Swiss Federal Commission on Sexual Health and HIV. Title: Assessing the Global Burden of STIs and Developing the Workforce to Fight It To advocate for the resources to prevent, diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs), we need accurate and precise data on both the frequency of STIs and on their consequences. These include reproductive tract damage, mother to child transmission, oncogenesis, antimicrobial resistance and mental health problems. This lecture will describe how we can galvanise, educate and coordinate global efforts to estimate and tackle the global burden of STIs.
