XIANG-SHENG CHEN, MD – NATIONAL CENTER FOR STD CONTROL, NANJING, CHINA Dr. Xiang-Sheng Chen is vice director of the National Center for STD Control at the China CDC and professor at Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and Peking Union Medical College (PUMC). As a member of the China National Health Commission Expert Advisory Panel for Disease Control and a leading expert at the National Center, Dr. Chen has made great contribution to development and implementation of the national programmes on prevention and control of syphilis and other STDs. He also acts as a member the WHO Expert Advisory Panel for Prevention and Control of STIs to provide technical consultation and support to development of international guidelines and global programmes on control of STDs and elimination of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis. Title: Evolving STI Epidemiology in Asia Asia is a region with high burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the world. The STI surveillance programme in the region is universally poor although it has been improved. Promising progress in control of STIs, especially syphilis has been evident in some countries but antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of gonorrhoea becomes an impending public health problem in the region.
