WILLIAM M. GEISLER

WILLIAM M. GEISLER, MD, M.P.H – UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM, BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA, USA William M. Geisler, M.D., M.P.H, is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has an established chlamydia research program that has studied the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, treatment, natural history, and immunogenetic aspects of chlamydia and its outcomes. Dr. Geisler also has a research interest in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of Mycoplasma genitalium infections. He has 20 years of clinical experience in the evaluation and management STIs and provides STI education and training through the Alabama-North Carolina STD/HIV Prevention Training Center. He is on the editorial board of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and has served as an expert consultant for the CDC and WHO. Title: Summary and Perspectives on Macrolide Resistance and Efficacy Concerns in Bacterial STIs and the Continued Use of Azithromycin Macrolide resistance has become a concern when treating syphilis, gonorrhea, and Mycoplasma genitalium infections. Azithromycin efficacy is a concern when treating rectal chlamydia. This presentation will summarize macrolide resistance and efficacy concerns in the treatment of bacterial STIs and provide perspectives on continued use of azithromycin as an introduction to an expert panel discussion on the topic.
