JANE HOCKING, PHD – MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF POPULATION AND GLOBAL HEALTH, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Professor Jane Hocking is an epidemiologist whose research interests include the epidemiology and control of STIs. She has particular interest in the treatment of chlamydia infection and is currently running a RCT comparing azithromycin and doxycycline for the treatment of rectal chlamydia infection. Title: The Impact of Azithromycin Pharmacokinetics on Sti Treatment Efficacy. The unique pharmacokinetic properties of azithromycin have enabled it to be administered as single dose treatment making it preferred for chlamydia and NGU until recently. However, these pharmacokinetic properties also increase the development of STI resistance. The pharmacokinetics of azithromycin vary by tissue site suggesting that site specific dosing regimens (including extended doses) could increase efficacy and minimise the development of resistance.
