MARLEEN TEMMERMAN, MD, PHD – AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY, NAIROBI, KENYA Prof dr Marleen Temmerman is a well-recognized global leader in women, child & adolescent health. She brings academic, technical, political, governance, management and leadership skills to the table as well as diplomacy, advocacy, fundraising, training and clinical expertise. Since 2015: Chair, Department Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University (AKU) East Africa, Nairobi, Kenya. Prior: Director Department of Reproductive Health and Research, WHO, Geneva; Elected Senator to the Belgian Parliament (Member Commission on Social Affairs, Chair Commission on Foreign Affairs and Defence. In that capacity, she was a member of the European Parliamentary Forum and Chair of the HIV/AIDS Advisory Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union; Founding Director of the Inter Title: Sexual Health, Sexual Rights, and HIV/STI Among Women in East-Africa Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are fundamental to people's health and survival, to economic development, and to the wellbeing of humanity. Progress in SRHR requires confrontation of the barriers embedded in laws, policies, the economy, and in social norms and values—especially gender inequality—that prevent people from achieving sexual and reproductive health.
